  4. Ailsa Mellon Bruce was a noted philanthropist and patron of the arts. In 1940, she established the Avalon Foundation, which made grants to cultural institutions, colleges and universities, hospitals, youth and community service organizations, churches, and conservation projects.

  5. In 1926 she married David K. E. Bruce, who became a distinguished diplomat and also served as the National Gallery's president (1939-1945). Ailsa and David divorced in 1945. Mrs. Mellon Bruce established the Avalon Foundation in 1940, which, among other things, funded the Gallery's Andrew W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts.
