The Arabic alphabet is made up of nineteen shapes that represent twenty-eight letters with the help of dots. E.g. the shape ٮ could represent the letter ب (b), ت (t), ث (th), or the initial يـ (y) by changing the number and positions of dots. Short vowels are not considered letters in Arabic alphabet.
- Let us imagine a word that has three letters, all of which are ‘baa’ (b-b-b). There is no such word of course but for the sake of the exercise, imagine there is.
- How would you write the word ‘baa’ (b-aa)? با One final rule: certain Arabic letters cannot be connected to the left. This is to distinguish them from letters that closely resemble them.
- The informal word for ‘father’ or ‘dad’ in Arabic is ‘baaba’. How would you write it down (b-aa-b-aa)? بابا.
- The word for ‘father’ in Arabic is ‘ab’. How would you write it down (a-b)? Remember that ‘alif’ cannot be connected to the letter on the left.
