   • In the winter of 1843, Augustus Washington was enrolled in his freshman year at Dartmouth College when he turned to photography to earn some income. He soon left Dartmouth, and within five years had a thriving studio in Hartford, Connecticut. By 1850, he was a prosperous photographer and a husband.

   • Augustus Washington later gave up his photographic work and became a sugarcane grower on the shores of the Saint Paul River. In 1858 he began a political carrier, serving in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. He served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1865 to 1869. He died in Monrovia in 1875.

   • Augustus Washington was born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1820 or 1821. His father had been a slave in Virginia. His mother was a native of South Asia, but he says no more about her. She probably died young. His stepmother, described by Washington as 'an excellent Christian woman of Indian, white and negro extraction', had also been a slave.
