It has been 12 years since Barbershop 2: Back in Business and, because that's how time works, the returning cast members for Barbershop: The Next Cut are all a dozen years older than they were last time out. This third entry in the franchise (fourth if you count spinoff, Beauty Shop) opts to follow its cast and go more adult with its plot. The Next Cut focuses heavily on the problem of gang violence.

Malcolm D. Lee helms the effort, working from a screenplay by Kenya Barris & Tracy Oliver and much of the cast from the first two films are back including Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas, Jazsmin Lewis-Kelley, Eve, Deon Cole, and Anthony Anderson (Troy Garity also returns, but oh-so-briefly). The ensemble—and this is an ensemble film—also features Regina Hall; J.B. Smoove; Common; Nicki Minaj; Lamorne Morris; Michael Rainey, Jr.; Utkarsh Ambudkar; and Margot Bingham.

While this large cast is exceptionally enjoyable to watch as they discuss issues—both serious and not—in the barbershop, the movie has something of an obsessive need to work in moments for everyone and that leads to a lack of depth. With a main plot that involves a desire by the workers in the shop to reduce gang violence in Chicago and serious discussions about that problem, a lack of depth hampers a full examination of the issue and hurts the film.

For all its faults, there is something wise and enjoyable in the way the members of the shop and community talk about the problems in Barbershop: The Next Cut. The best moments in the franchise have always revolved around the discussions of the barbers and customers. That is again the case here, but now a lot of those discussions are about more tha...
