In 1487 he joined the conspiracy of the nobles against King James III. He held the office of Chancellor [Scotland] between June 1488 and 1493, reinstated by King James IV. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography. Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll.
The medieval estates of the Campbells were much increased by Colin Campbell of Lochow (Argyllshire) (d. 1493), who was created Earl of Argyll in 1457. Through marriage to a daughter and co-heir of John Stewart, Lord Lorne, he acquired the lordship of Lorne (Argyllshire).
