Willow is considered a "beginner/intermediate" character due to the nature of her special item. This is why she is the first unlockable character. She is meant to help new players that may have trouble adapting to the Light mechanics of Don't Starve.
Willow will not receive damage from fire, though she is still capable of taking indirect damage through overheating. Her immunity to fire damage allows her to extinguish smoldering objects without taking damage and she does so faster than other characters.
