The Great Schism of 1054 was the breakup of the Christian church into two sections—the Western and the Eastern sections. These two sections were to turn into the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.
There is supposed to be only one pope at a time. But from 1378 to 1417 more than one person claimed to be pope. This period is called the Great Western Schism. “Schism” means splitting or separation. All popes had lived in Rome, in what is now Italy, from the 1st century ad.
