The Nolde-Museum is the former home of the painter and printmaker Emil Nolde, and was designed by him in 1927. Constructed like a stronghold, with narrow windows and a flat roof, the building recalls the contemporary architecture of the Bauhaus.

In autumn 1913, Ada and Emil Nolde accompanied an expedition to what was then the colony of German New Guinea. Once there the small group benefitted from the colonial infrastructure. Nolde was given the role of expedition artist and created numerous watercolour portraits.
