Forbury Gardens is a public park in the town of Reading in the English county of Berkshire. The park is on the site of the outer court of Reading Abbey, which was in front of the Abbey Church. The site was formerly known as the Forbury, and one of the roads flanking the current gardens is still known as The Forbury.

Forbury Gardens. In medieval times the Forbury Gardens was a rough patch of open ground, where horses grazed and pilgrims waited for services at the abbey church. At this time it was known as ‘the Forbury’, an old English placename meaning the place in front of the burgh. The Forbury became a town park in 1856.
Forbury Garden is a mid-19th-century public garden covering about 2 hectares, on a medieval site. The site is largely enclosed by a low brick and flint wall, in places still punctuated by tall piers to give a castellated effect. The remaining Abbey ruins stand to the south-east of the Garden.
About. Forbury Gardens is a delightful Victorian town garden, created at the height of the urban parks movement. The gardens have recently undergone major restoration. They are located between the town centre and the ruins of the 11th century abbey, not far from Reading Station.
