Hohensalzburg Fortress (German: Festung Hohensalzburg, lit. 'High Salzburg Fortress') is a large medieval fortress in the city of Salzburg, Austria. It sits atop the Festungsberg mountain at an altitude of 506 m. It was erected at the behest of the prince-archbishops of Salzburg.

2 days ago · The closest it came was during the German Peasants‘ War in 1525, when a group of miners and farmers laid siege to the castle. However, lacking proper siege equipment, they were unable to breach the walls and were eventually driven back by the Prince-Archbishop‘s troops. The fortress did change hands peacefully on a few occasions, though.
