'Lilith' is an overpoweringly claustrophobic film - I left the cinema gasping for air. Although it sometimes rather self-consciously strains for poetry, there is very little like it in American cinema.
Still, for a movie that arguably glamorizes mental illnesses, Lilith is better than just retro amusement. For my money, the themes were a lot more compelling than if it had gone with a really paternal boy-helps-girl-overcome-childhood trauma-and-is-miraculously-cured-over-night romance.
Lilith stars Warren Beatty as Vincent Bruce, a troubled ex-soldier who, on returning home, takes a counselling position at a local mental hospital. It is in the confines of the exclusive institute that he meets Lilith Arthur (Jean Seberg) an enigmatic and troubled soul with whom he becomes increasingly infatuated.
