Liebermann Villa, Berlin. The Liebermann Villa is a museum located in the former summer residence of the German painter Max Liebermann. It is situated directly at the shores of Lake Wannsee in Berlin. It has been open to public since April 30, 2006 and shows a collection of Liebermann's paintings of his villa and its garden.
The Villa. Around 1900, a trend for country houses became noticeable among Berlin’s upper middle classes. In July 1909, the painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935) acquired one of the last waterfront properties in the Alsen villa colony on Lake Wannsee – two plots of land at Große Seestraße 24 (today Colomierstraße 3).
Permanent exhibition in the Liebermann Villa. In the garden of his summer house at Wannsee, Max Liebermann found painterly motifs that would prove central to his later career. More than 200 oil paintings and countless drawings and pastels were created in the garden, which was designed according to Liebermann’s own ideas.
Max Liebermann’s villa, like other Jewish-owned residences such as Villa Minoux, where the infamous Wannsee Conference took place, was confiscated by the Nazis in 1933. For an insight into Liebermann’s work, life and times, the painstakingly restored Klein Versailles (small Versailles), as he called it, is second to none.
In 1909 the artist Max Liebermann instructed his architect Paul Otto Baumgarten to build him a summer house on the banks of Berlin’s Lake Wannsee.
