Max von Sydow (10 April 1929 – 8 March 2020) was a Swedish-French actor. In Game of Thrones, he portrayed the Three-Eyed Raven in the sixth season, taking over the role from Struan Rodger. A veteran actor, von Sydow is perhaps best known for playing the title character in The Exorcist, and the lead of Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal.
Von Sydow was first noticed internationally for playing the 14th-century knight Antonius Block in Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957), which features iconic scenes of his character challenging Death to a game of chess.
In 2016, he joined the sixth season of the HBO series Game of Thrones (2011) as the Three-eyed Raven, which earned him his Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Max von Sydow died on March 8, 2020, in Provence, France, and was survived by his wife Catherine Brelet and four children. He was 90.
