Joe Black is a fictional character appearing in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, from which he serves as the protagonist. He is portrayed by Brad Pitt.
Death, in the form of a human named Joe Black, comes to Earth to guide the soul of media mogul William Parrish to the afterlife. However, during his time on Earth, Death falls in love with William's daughter.
After briefly catching glimpses of each other, Joe Black is struck by multiple vehicles and dies. His spirit is transformed into the personification of Death, who appears in the form of a man named Joe Black and visits the Parrish family. Joe Black becomes drawn to Susan and asks her father, Bill (played by Anthony Hopkins), to act as his guide while he is on Earth.
