In 1997, he co-wrote Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) , with Rick Berman, which was released in 1998. His most successful post-Trek outing was developing the Stephen King property, "The Dead Zone", along with his son Shawn Piller, for television. Piller died from cancer on November 2, 2005. Born May 30, 1948.

Dec 12, 2018 · When Piller passed away in 2005 after a long battle with cancer, his friends, family and fans created the Michael Piller Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Writing for the Screen and Stage Program.
Yesterday would have been his 64th birthday, had he not been tragically taken from us in 2005 at age 57. Considering just how many hats Piller wore, it is difficult for anyone who wasn't there to know precisely where his ideas end and the teamwork of the greater Trek collective begins.
