Equal parts sculpture and costume, the wearable Soundsuits of artist Nick Cave appear to defy convention and physics. Two of these wildly imaginative works are on view in the pavilion of NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

  4. Artwork Description. Trained as a fiber artist and dancer, Nick Cave named his ongoing series of Soundsuits for the rustling he heard as he moved around in them. He created his first suit in response to the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers in 1991.

With all its beads and sequins, this one is pretty fragile, and the artist thinks of it as a sculpture. But Cave designs many of the other ones so that people can wear them.
