The exterior is built of Stoke stone from the Stoke Hall Quarry in Grindleford, Derbyshire and is decorated with carvings by F. W. Pomeroy. The friezes depict the industries of Sheffield, and the 64-metre-high clock-tower is surmounted by a statue of Vulcan .

Its clock and tower, the face of our city, stands at the north-east corner, over 100ft high and topped with a statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking.

It shows the bronze statue of Vulcan on top of Sheffield Town Hall, created in 1896 by artist Mario Raggi. This muscular male nude has protected the city for 123 years, seeing us through two World Wars, but almost forgotten by people below.

Mar 25, 2019 · At one time the Town Hall was the tallest building in Sheffield; these days it’s dwarfed by many of the surrounding buildings and has lost quite a bit of what must have been a very imposing presence at one time. The clock tower is 64 metres high, topped by a statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.

The friezes depict the industries of Sheffield, and the 210-foot-high clock-tower is surmounted by a statue of Vulcan. Bells were never installed in the clock-tower, but in 2002 an electronic bell sound system was added to provide hourly strikes and Westminster-style quarter chimes.
