    • 1990–1991: Formation and early years. TLC had its beginnings in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1990, when Watkins and Lopes split off from another group called 2nd Nature with Crystal Jones, who allegedly came up with a concept for a girl group with a tomboyish, hip-hop image, similar to the blend of contemporary R&B and hip-hop music of new jack swing act Bell Biv DeVoe.
    • 1993–1997: CrazySexyCool. During early 1994, TLC re-entered the studio with Dallas Austin, Tim & Bob, Jermaine Dupri, Babyface, Organized Noize, and Sean "Puffy" Combs to record their second album, CrazySexyCool.
    • 1998–2001: Solo Ventures & FanMail. The third album for the group took some time to come into fruition. In the summer of 1998, Lopes announced that she was working on a solo album, and Watkins tried her hand at acting with an appearance in the Hype Williams-directed Belly.
    • 2002–2006: Lisa Lopes's death & 3D. In 2001, TLC nonetheless regrouped and entered the studio together to work on material for a new album. Unfortunately, on April 25, 2002, while vacationing in Honduras, Lopes lost control of a vehicle she was driving and died in a car crash.
