Mount Whitney's summit is on the Sierra Crest and the Great Basin Divide. It lies near many of the Sierra Nevada's highest peaks. The peak rises dramatically above the Owens Valley, sitting 10,778 feet (3,285 m) or just over 2 mi (3.2 km) above the town of Lone Pine 15 mi (24 km) to the east, in the Owens Valley.

Proceed cautiously on this 8.8-mile out-and-back trail near Lone Pine, California. Generally considered a highly challenging route, it should only be attempted by experienced adventurers. This is a popular trail for backpacking, rock climbing, and skiing, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.

Mount Whitney, of the California Sierra Nevada, holds numerous distinctions. It is the highpoint of both Tulare & Inyo counties. It is the highest peak in the Sierra, & indeed in all of California. Finally, it rises higher than any piece of land in the United States outside of Alaska.
Jul 22, 2021 · The Whitney trail is well maintained and clearly visible in most parts (in July with no snow). It was still useful to have an offline map for a few spots where we were unsure what was trail and what wasn’t. It is also a smart emergency backup item to have in case something does go wrong.
