The 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry (The Polar Bears) was activated 1 Nov 1967 at Ft. Lewis and joined the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam as it’s last maneuver element. The 3rd of the 34th Artillery was a towed 105mm howitzer battalion assigned to the 9th Infantry Division.
The 9th Infantry Division (“Old Reliables”) was constituted 1 August 1940 at Fort Bragg and deployed overseas 11 December 1942 to invade North Africa, where advanced elements of the division landed 8 November 1942.
