  1. Sep 20, 2023 · From “Murder House” to “Double Feature,” see how the FX anthology series fares in this list of worst to best. Find out which seasons impressed with horror, humor and history, and which ones disappointed with confusion, repetition and politics.

    • Asylum (2012) American Horror Story Season 2.
    • Coven (2013) American Horror Story Season 3. A regular fan-favorite among American Horror Story seasons, there is a lot to love about American Horror Story: Coven, particularly the iconic performances from the ensemble female-led cast.
    • Murder House (2011) American Horror Story Season 1. The original American Horror Story is very nearly perfect and certainly the purest form of all American Horror Story seasons.
    • 1984 (2019) American Horror Story Season 9. American Horror Story: 1984 brought something completely different to the franchise. While the season suffered from the absence of Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson, both Billie Lourd and Emma Roberts valiantly attempted to pick up the slack.
    • Season 1: Murder House (2011) Even now, Ryan Murphy tells EW that Murder House remains the chapter nearest and dearest to his heart, saying, "That first season sort of reinvented the anthological storytelling space that I loved as a kid and has ushered in a whole new way of MAKING television (creatively and economically) and I'm very proud of that."
    • Season 2: Asylum (2012) After Murder House proved prime-time audiences could stomach cable-curated horror, season two's Asylum fired on all cylinders: psychological horror from complete loss of autonomy, atmospheric frights from nearly every frame, and even body horror from a self-induced abortion and aversion therapy among other violent injustices.
    • Season 9: 1984 (2019) 1984 is a homage to the giants whose shoulders the whole show stands on: slasher flicks from the age of Aqua Net — the films that attracted mainstream mass audiences to the genre with shock and awe.
    • Season 8: Apocalypse (2018) After seven years of ups and downs for the series, season eight saw perhaps the biggest risk AHS has taken to date, and (dare we say) it paid off.

    • Season 1 - Murder House: The One that Started It All. Dramatic highs: The school shooting and Violet realizing she’s been dead for weeks are definitely top of the list.
    • Season 2 - Asylum: The One with Bloody Face. Dramatic highs: Um, nearly all of it? “Asylum” is a top-notch season, but if I have to pick one moment, it’s definitely the “Name Game” song, right?
    • Season 7 - Cult: The One That Gets Political. Dramatic highs: The performances of Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters were impeccable. Paulson is always impeccable on the show and "Cult" was no different, as she went from devastated "snowflake" on election night to terrorized woman being crazy to in-control puppetmaster and then possibly a cult leader herself.
    • Season 6 - Roanoke: Where Things Get Meta. Dramatic highs: The midseason twist of taking everyone involved in the Roanoke documentary and putting them back in the nightmare was an incredibly clever twist -- and it still could have flopped, but AHS pulled it off really well.
