The first season of American Idol (originally entitled American Idol: The Search for a Superstar) premiered on June 11, 2002, over four months after Pop Idol's first series ended, with Will Young winning the series, and continued until September 4, 2002.
After 9 singers advanced on to the Top 10, five contestants were chosen by the judges to compete in the Wild Card Round. The contestants competing were Kelli Glover, Christopher Aaron, Alexis Lopez, R.J. Helton & Angela Peel. Helton was chosen to continue on in the competition.

- EJay Day. EJay Day placed 10th and was the first finalist to be eliminated in American Idol history. What’s interesting about EJay is that he was originally not chosen to advance in the voting rounds, but was brought back to replace another singer who lied about his age.
- Jim Verraros. After placing ninth on the show, Jim participated in the American Idol Live! Tour during which he came out as gay, making him the first finalist to come out.
- A.J. Gil. Placing eighth on the show, A.J. was the youngest contestant at only 17 years old during the first season. He was also the first Latino finalist in the history of American Idol.
- Ryan Starr. Unlike the many cringy auditions on American Idol, Ryan's was the complete opposite where she received praise from the judges. After coming in seventh place, she released a song called "My Religion" which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs Chart.
- Kelly Clarkson. Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media. Kelly Clarkson has gone on to become one of the most successful "American Idol" alumni after winning the show's first season.
- Justin Guarini. Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media. After "American Idol" wrapped, runner-up Justin Guarini signed with 19 Management and scored a record deal with RCA.
- Nikki McKibbin. After Nikki McKibbin came in third place on "American Idol," she signed a record deal with RCA Records but clashed with the label over her career's direction.
- Tamyra Gray. Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media. Tamyra Gray's fourth-place finish allowed her to launch her own career in the entertainment industry.
- American Idol's First Season. It's hard to believe, but it's been 12 years since the first season of American Idol aired. The show premiered in June 2002 and featured a large group of amateur singers who were all competing for the title of "American Idol," as well as a recording deal with RCA Records.
- Kelly Clarkson. I don't think I have to go on much about the success Kelly Clarkson has seen since winning American Idol. In fact, Ms. Clarkson (who is actually a Mrs. now) is one of the most successful Idol winners to date.
- Justin Guarini. Justin Guarini was the runner-up of season one, and he had quite a promising start after the show finished. Immediately after the season came to an end, Guarini also received a recording deal with RCA Records and co-starred alongside Kelly Clarkson in the musical From Justin: To Kelly.
- A Scene From From Justin: To Kelly. Though the movie was panned by critics, my 13-year-old self loved it!
