Biography. Robert M. Cunningham (1924-2010) created illustrations for a variety of America’s leading magazines with sports themes as a common subject matter. He also did a great deal of work for an impressive list of corporate clients, such as American Express, Exxon, ABC-TV, Mobil, Chevrolet, and New York Telephone, among others.
Robert Cunningham was born August 4, 1924 in Herrington, Kansas. He studied at the University of Kansas, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Art Students League in New York. Robert was known for illustration and marine genre painting.

Jun 24, 2013 · Cunningham got his first big break in illustration when the visionary art director Richard Gangel spotted his talent and put an 8 page portfolio of Cunningham's work in Sports Illustrated. From that day on, he developed a long list of discerning clients. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1998.
