Today, the zoo is home to about 250 species of animals, and nearly 2,000 individual animals. During the 1990s, the Chapultepec Zoo was completely remodeled and residents were distributed among the more bio-climatic areas that can be seen today.
Chapultepec Zoo houses some important native species that are endangered or threatened such as the volcano rabbit, the Mexican wolf, jaguar, thick-billed parrot, ocellated turkey, axolotl and the red-kneed tarantula.
