On December 12, 1982, at about 11:00 p.m., a pair of men in ski masks cut through the roof at Sentry, an armored car company in the Bronx. They burst into the security office and subdued the only guard on duty, 25-year-old Christos Potamitis, by handcuffing him to a railing.
Chris Potamitis lives with his parents and younger sister in Astoria, Queens, New York in the early 1980s. His immigrant father is fired from his job after 10 years of cleaning a shady Greek social club. Chris fails to get into the police academy because of a previous marijuana conviction.
In the film, Chris Potamitis, played by Liam Hemsworth, is portrayed as the mastermind behind the heist. However, in reality, Christopher Maher led the operation. Maher, a former security guard at the Empire State Building, had intimate knowledge of the building’s security systems, making him a key player in the successful execution of the heist.
