Mar 28, 2021 · The Plymouth Horizon was introduced in 1979 as a 1980 model. It was based on the Chrysler K-Car platform and came with a fuel efficient 2.2 liter engine that could produce up to 65 horsepower. This engine gave the Horizon excellent fuel economy, especially when compared to other vehicles on the market at that time.

The Plymouth Reliant and its Dodge Aries counterpart came as coupes, sedans, and wagons, all with room for six. Although the wagon survived until 1988, it and almost all other wagons died out as a result of another K-based people mover, the minivan. Testing the ’81 Wagon involved a sidewall-bending demonstration of understeer.

Hot off the energy crisis, making a silk purse out of the K-car’s ear must’ve seemed like a winner. The Exec limo added over 30 inches to a K-car’s wheelbase, perfect for cheap suits with long legs. Fuel prices fell, rendering this econo limo unnecessary, but what really killed it was the fact that it was a stretched K-car.
The K-car’s biggest trick was its transformation into the 1984 Caravan and Voyager—the first modern minivans. They were dubbed Magic Wagons for their magical ability to fit in a garage. Plus, Doug Henning was in the commercials, and what’s more enchanting than that?
The K-based Spirit R/T featured a 16-valve head by Lotus on top of the venerable Chrysler turbocharged 2.2-liter inline-four. Manual only, the R/T made 224 horsepower and hit 60 mph in 5.8 seconds on its way to a 141-mph top speed. The Spirit and its mate, the Plymouth Acclaim, were the final K-car derivatives and lasted until 1995.
Chrysler used two basic bodies in 1980, the aforementioned “R” and now the “J/M.”. The J and M were essentially lightly modified F-bodies — that is, Aspens / Volares with much higher-grade trim and different exterior and interior styling — and were sold as LeBaron (in two lengths) and Cordoba.
