During the J & B era, another member of the Watkins family, Cornelius Dwayne Watkins, joined the quartet. In 1993, after recording eight albums for J & B, the Canton Spirituals signed with Blackberry Records.
Presently, The Canton Spirituals members (Wallace Strickland, Victor Allen, Ralph Loften, Michael Richardson, Merlin Lucious, Cornelius Dwayne Watkins, and Rufus Mapp) are under the direction of Harvey Watkins, Jr., since the passing of his father, Harvey Watkins, Sr.,who died of cancer in Jackson, Mississippi, on November 16, 1994.

Mar 22, 2020 · Cornelius Dwayne Watkins Jr. Cornelius Watkins, Jr., 40, of Detroit, died March 22. The father of 11, who loved the Detroit Lions and was a Pistons fan, died after falling ill with COVID-19. His wife, Carolyn Hanley-Watkins, said he was outgoing and loved others more than himself.
