American walnut with rippled maple back-rest. David has recently started to build the Monogram rocking chair using a combination of different timbers. The first of these, as pictured, uses light coloured rippled maple for the back-rest as a contrast to the dark American walnut of the seat and frame.

Oct 22, 2021 · David Haig (davidhaig.co.nz) is best known for his “monogram rocking chair,” made from steam-bent, air-dried lumber. The flowing curves that make up most of the chair are incredibly beautiful. I’m a sucker for flowing curves. Rocking chairs, as you can imagine, aren’t easy to make.
He is best known for his design, the Monogram rocking chair. Educated in the United Kingdom, David moved to New Zealand in 1976. Changing direction after completing a history degree at Oxford University, he began developing his craft as a woodworker.
He first designed his world famous and multiple award winning Monogram rocking chair some 30 years ago and has been refining and perfecting it ever since. Likewise, a version of his Folium chair series won the first prize at a major Australasian Studio Furniture Awards exhibition in 2018, near Canberra.
