    • 1. (1865–1923), 29th president of the US 1921–23; full name Warren Gamaliel Harding. A Republican, he served in the US Senate 1915–21 before becoming president. His administration was marked by corruption and scandal, in particular, the Teapot Dome scandal, in which his secretary of the interior accepted money in return for leasing the Teapot Dome oil reserves in Wyoming to private oil producers. Harding died in office while on a trip to California.
