On April 6, 2016, he was named head men's basketball coach at Central Connecticut State. Marshall won his first game as head coach of Central Connecticut on November 11, 2016 a 75-60 win over Hartford. After the 2021 season, Marshall and Central Connecticut mutually agreed to part ways ending Marshall's time at the school after five seasons.

The former NBA and UConn star was 40-140 in five seasons at CCSU, with losing records each year. The Blue Devils were 5-16 this season and 5-13 in the Northeast Conference, failing to qualify for the conference tournament.

In four seasons, Marshall has guided the Blue Devils program to their highest single-season win total since 2012-13 and a return to the Northeast Conference tournament in 2017-18.
