  3. East Lake is a popular recreation lake in a setting of wooded shorelines, sandy beaches and brilliant blue-green water. The lake is one of two exceptional trout lakes nestled in the caldera of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, the largest ice-age volcano in Oregon.

  4. Damsel hatches are minimal at East Lake but nymphs will sometimes be effective. COF fly tyers have created some unique patterns that can provide that extra sparkle (see the COF CDs). Subtle differences in the fly can make or break your hookup count.

  5. During the hatch, any area from the White Slide, to the resort or the Hot Springs may be really good but on some days you’ll need to be mobile to go looking for the best activity. A motor boat is great here, but there are plenty of really good East Lake anglers who do it in a pontoon or even a tube.

  6. There can be some great dry fly fishing at East Lake during the summer, but you definitely want to bring a couple big streamers. Some of the most prolific hatches include callibaetis and chironomids, and if I am throwing streamers I like a black Bunny Leech.
