Eddy Merckx's 1972 hour record steel-framed bike. In 1972, Eddy Merckx set a new hour record at 49.431 km (30.715 mi) in Mexico City at an altitude of 2,300 m (7,500 ft) where he proclaimed it to have been "the hardest ride I have ever done".
In 1965 only 15 had held the Hour record. This was a very exclusive club, much more so than the list of Tour de France winners, and therefore a natural goal for Eddy. Although Eddy Merckx went on to create an incomparable road record, he was equally adept on the track.
Merckx broke the hour record in October 1972, extending the record by almost 800 metres. He acquired the nickname " The Cannibal ", suggested by the daughter of a teammate upon being told by her father of how Merckx would not let anyone else win.
