Emma Shannon is the main caretaker of Sweetwater Station throughout season one. She acts as a motherly figure for the riders, but can also be tough when the situation calls for it. Her main love interest and eventual husband is marshal Sam Cain.
Emma Shannon, played by Melissa Leo, was the first care taker of the riders at the way station. Even though she wasn't on the show for very long (only the first season) she was still one of the favorites on the show. Emma was the true example of a woman living in the era of the Wild West.

Emma Shannon (Melissa Leo) Emma may come off as tough, but deep down, she has a soft spot for each of the riders, guiding them into adulthood. Emma, herself had a rough start in life, so she knows how they feel, the desperation to leave their mark on a world they don’t exactly fit in.
Emma Shannon was the first to fill the role of cook, housekeeper, mother hen and confidant to the young Pony Express riders but between the first and second season she married Marshall Sam Cain and left Sweetwater.
Emma (Melissa Leo) was the original cook and housemother, replaced by the more mysterious Rachel (Clare Wren) in the second season after Emma ran off with Marshal Cain (Brett Cullen).
