Sir Frederic William Burton RHA (8 April 1816 in Wicklow – 16 March 1900 in London) was an Irish Victorian painter and curator who was the third director of the National Gallery, London for 20 years from 1874.

May 20, 2023 · Sir Frederick Burton’s life, spanning from 1816 to 1900, bore witness to an era of immense change and artistic upheaval. His remarkable journey traversed both his native Ireland and the vibrant art circles of London.
In 1840 Burton was on the Council of the Royal Hibernian Academy and became a founder member of the Irish Archeological Society. He painted portraits of most of the famous Irish celebrities of the time. Between 1839 and 1841 he visited the west of Ireland with Petrie documenting antiquarian sites.
