Georges Auric (French:; 15 February 1899 – 23 July 1983) was a French composer, born in Lodève, Hérault, France. He was considered one of Les Six, a group of artists informally associated with Jean Cocteau and Erik Satie. Before he turned 20 he had orchestrated and written incidental music for several ballets and stage productions.

Georges Auric (born Feb. 15, 1899, Lodève, France—died July 24, 1983, Paris) was a French composer best known for his film scores and ballets. In these and other works, he was among those who reacted against the chromatic harmonic language and Symbolist structures of Claude Debussy.

There is not even a complete list of his works. In the words of Jeremy Drake, ‘though he is most at ease in stage and film music, Auric has a delicate sense of poetry that comes out particularly in his songs and instrumental slow movements’.

As much as I love the pure concert works Auric composed—especially the Piano Sonatina, the Piano Sonata, the Violin Sonata, the late chamber works—these were never his most successful works. Auric was at his best when collaborating with others.
