Mar 11, 2024 · Throughout our history we have hosted many different types of events including afternoon teas, educational lectures, a variety of musical styles, patriotic and veteran focused events, community enrichment events at our location in Grosse Pointe Farms.
The War Memorial, also known as the Russell A. Alger Jr. House and as the Moorings was dedicated to the memory of veterans and soldiers of World War II. It is located at 32 Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.
In 1949, it was dedicated by the newly-formed Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association to a twofold purpose: to serve as a perpetual memorial to the 3,500 Grosse Pointers who served and the 126 who died in World War II; and it was to serve as a continuing center for educational and charitable activities of the Grosse Pointe community.
Situated on the grounds of the historic Alger Estate in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, The War Memorial serves an estimated 250,000 individuals annually. Our programming includes honoring veterans, engaging experiences for adults and children, community events and celebrations, and premier hospitality services.
Opened in November 2022, the Fred. M. Alger Center At The War Memorial serves as a home for art, culture, and the humanities right here in Grosse Pointe Farms. The 25,000 square foot facility with sweeping views features a full restoration of the 1961 crystal ballroom, and a new Colonnade entrance that is welcoming to all people from all places.
The War Memorial proudly serves the Southeastern Michigan community and continues to remain an experiential place for everyone from everywhere through a wide offering of classes, activities, and events.
Mar 19, 2024 · On March 18, 1949, the Alger estate was deeded over to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association. Grosse Pointers, and especially veterans, finally had their War Memorial and a place where the community could gather in a beautiful, serene setting.

Late in 2019, The War Memorial embarked on a journey to build a more inspired future. With our construction project officially underway, we remain committed to building a permanent home for art, culture, and the humanities right here in Grosse Pointe.
