Health and death. Klugman was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1974. [37] In 1988, he lost a vocal cord to throat cancer surgery but continued to act on stage and television, though he was left with a quiet, raspy voice. [38] In later years subsequent to his operation, he regained limited strength in his voice.
