James V, King of Scots had several mistresses but Lady Margaret Erskine was his favorite and the mother of the most important of his nine illegitimate children. Lady Margaret Erskine was born on October 8, 1515.
He also had a number of mistresses, including Euphemia Elphinstone, by whom he fathered the illegitimate Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney. Misrule and corruption during James' minority meant he inherited a kingdom that was virtually bankrupt, so he set out to find a bride with a large dowry.
A highly strung, intelligent man who alternated between black depression and bouts of feverish energy, he had already fathered at least nine illegitimate children by a series of mistresses.
