Festus' feisty Aunt Thede (Jeanette Nolan) rolls into town and kick-starts one of the zaniest and yet most endearing Gunsmoke episodes ever. Thede is a shotgun-toting illiterate moonshiner and preacher from the hills of Missouri who counsels a lovestruck couple.
In 1957 she played "Ma Grilk" in season 3 episode 5, "Potato Road", of the TV Western Gunsmoke. Nolan was cast as Emmy Zecker in the 1959 episode "Johnny Yuma" of the ABC western series The Rebel, starring Nick Adams. She appeared in two episodes of David Janssen's crime drama Richard Diamond, Private Detective.

With one of them wounded it seems like a three-way split until Pike, the wounded one, surprises the other three.

S14.E16 ∙ Time of the Jackals. Mon, Jan 13, 1969. Matt and Festus shoot it out with an outlaw who was a member of the infamous Jess Trevor gang, particularly notorious for murder and mayhem. Matt finally kicks in the outlaw's door and shoots him. The outlaw lives for a few minutes, and Matt asks him why he deserted the Trevor gang.
