Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) is often considered to be one of the ‘pearls’ amongst 17th-century Dutch painters. He was born in Delft, a city in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The period was characterised by great economic prosperity, which is why it is also known as the Golden Age.
