John Marsh (31 May 1752 – 31 October 1828) was an English gentleman, composer, diarist and writer born in Netherseal, Derbyshire, England. A lawyer by training, he is known to have written more than 350 compositions, including at least 39 symphonies.
John Marsh (born 1752, Dorking, Surrey, Eng.—died 1828, Chichester, Sussex) was a composer and writer on music whose works include the only surviving English symphonies from the late 18th century. Largely self-taught, he became proficient at several instruments, including viola and violin.

My first introduction to John Marsh (1752-1828) was a performance of his String Quartet in B flat, which he subtitled “in the stile of Haydn’s Opera Prima”. Haydn’s early quartets were very popular in London long before that composer made his famous visits to the city in the 1790s.
