Julia Barry was a Third Class passenger on the RMS Titanic who perished in the sinking of the ocean liner.
Julia Barry was born on 16 October 1881 in Killeentierna, Currow, County Kerry, Ireland as the daughter of Michael Barry, a bricklayer and farmer, and Julia Prendiville. They married in May 1859 in Arderone. Julia was the youngest child, and had eleven siblings: Mary, Abigail, Johanna, Catherine, Ellen, Michael, Thomas, Patrick, James, Edmund and Johana.
By 1901 she was unemployed and a resident in her parents' house. Her brother Edward emigrated in 1908, settling in Yonkers, New York, where he worked as a bricklayer. Several of her other siblings also moved to the United States, her sister Mary in Elizabeth, New Jersey, her sister Hannah in Franklin, New Hampshire, and her sister Ellen in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Julia crossed the Atlantic for the first time in 1905, departing from Queenstown on September 2 and arriving in Manhattan aboard the RMS Cedric on September 10. She was 23 and unmarried. Julia was destined for her sister Ellen's residence in Springfield. In 1910 she worked as a servant for Charles D. Haskell. Julia would eventually settle in New York City.
Julia returned to Ireland between late 1910 and early 1911 in order to take care of her mother, who suffered from heart problems.
For her return to the United States, Julia had planned to board the RMS Celtic, but decided to travel on the RMS Titanic to have a faster voyage, informing her brother Edward of her change of plans and her arrival in New York within four days. She asked him to meet her at the docks. A few days before boarding the Titanic, Julia took a boat trip through the lakes of Killarney, where she lost her umbrella after falling overboard, which the boatman interpreted as a bad omen.
