She lived in England, France, and Switzerland, settling in Tübingen, Germany, to attend a girls’ school after her mother’s death. Although she had no formal training in acting, she appeared in her first film in the 1910s.

Lily Dagover was born in the Dutch East Indies to Dutch parents. She moved to Europe with her family at the age of ten and received her education in Tübingen, Germany. In 1913, she married actor Fritz Dagover and adopted his surname as her stage name. Her daughter Eva was born in 1914.
