Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (16 September 1916 – 11 December 2004) was an Indian Carnatic singer.
Madurai’s climate and fertile soil are ideal for malligai’s cultivation. The laterite reddish soil, having a rich content of sulphur and alkaloids, provides a base for its fragrance and a moist surface for it to bloom. Malligai is harvested between March and April and the cultivation is mainly handled by women.
During the early years of independent India, the Madurai municipality was dominated by reformists of the Indian National Congress. Madurai was upgraded to a municipal corporation on 1 May 1971 as per the Madurai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1971. It is the second oldest municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu, after Chennai.
