The sculpture of Mary Dyer represents the Quaker ideal of committed action grounded in quiet and worship. Her presence at the entrance of the building silently conveys to all who pass through Friends Center’s doors that it is a place of both conviction and contemplation.
Sylvia Shaw Judson, a Quaker sculptor who had trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and studied in Paris, received the commission. Mary Dyer, a “Comely, Grave woman, and of a good Personage,” was hanged in Boston in 1660, a deliberate martyr to her Quaker belief in freedom of religion.
This stone sculpture depicts the Quaker martyr Mary Dyer who was hung for her religious beliefs in June, 1660. The sculpture was ordered by a bill of the General Court of Massachusetts and was created by the well-known Quaker artist Sylvia Shaw Judson.
The bronze statue was dedicated in 1997 and created by Lloyd Lillie, who sculptured many prominent American figures, and the 20-figure sculpture that represented the first women’s rights convention in 1848 for the visitor center at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls.
