Jan 3, 2024 · Why does The National’s Matt Berninger write so many beautiful songs about divorce despite being (seemingly) happily married? I was wondering this recently when it occurred to me quite how many beautiful National songs there are about break ups, sometimes specifically divorce.
Berninger is married to Carin Besser, a one-time fiction editor for The New Yorker, who has often contributed to the band's songwriting (in songs such as "Brainy" and "Ada" from the album Boxer, among others) and backup vocals.
