Set not too long after the events of the preceding film, Planes: Fire & Rescue sees now-famous air racer Dusty Crophopper (voice of Dane Cook) abruptly learn that due to gearbox damage he may never race again. After a fiery accident imperils Propwash Junction, Dusty endeavors to find new meaning as an aerial firefighter.
Venturing to Piston Peak National Park, Dusty comes under the tutelage of veteran rescue helicopter Blade Ranger (voice of Ed Harris) and his team, which includes super scooper Dipper (voice of Julie Bowen) and heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (voice of Wes Studi). Ultimately, the team must save the park from a raging wildfire, a mission that will show Dusty what it means to be a true hero rather than a celebrity.
Modestly improving upon its 2013 predecessor, Planes: Fire & Rescue is nevertheless a formulaic programmer offering the same old same old. That said, the movie at least offers a better lesson that the first Planes (or Cars for that matter) in that it's not about what it takes to become famous but rather what it takes to be a hero.
This DisneyToons release -- yes, it's NOT a Pixar release even though it's a spinoff of Cars -- is a big old valentine to firefighters and the rescue personnel who fight fires in America's rural areas. Blade Ranger -- ably voiced by the ever-commanding Harris -- and his crew are an elite unit, not devoid of their quirks but literally well-oiled machines when in the field. The movie is dedicated to the firefighters and rescue personnel who battle America's wildfires, and the movie is certainly a heartfelt salute to their courage and dedication.
A marked improvement over its predecessor, Planes: Fire and Rescue is a heartfelt albeit formulaic tribute to heroism.
