   Why is Point Loma a military cemetery?

   • The cemetery emerged as part of Fort Rosecrans, San Diego’s first US military base, which most of our park was once a part of. Shortly after the United States conquered California in 1848, the government identified the strategic value of Point Loma and declared the entire area a military reservation where coastal defenses would be developed.

   Why was Point Loma important to San Diego?

   • In 1894, six engineers from the San Francisco Office of the Corps of Engineers formed a committee and visited San Diego to determine the location of batteries on Point Loma. One of these was the renowned Colonel Mendell. They noted that San Diego now had a population of 30,000 and that it had a railroad connection to the rest of the country.
