Mitski wrote, recorded, and released the album while studying at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music. The album has not yet had any form of physical release, but is available for streaming and download.
During the recording of Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, Mitski made use of the student orchestra at Purchase College, incorporating orchestral instrumentation into many tracks.
