Due to the current episode being an edit of the original special, the live-action scenes had to be redubbed by Tom Kenny and Stephen Hillenburg in order to remove any ties to the original special. This process resulted in the new lines not syncing up properly with the footage.

The episode's name originates from the Chinese city, Shanghai, a common destination of ships with abducted crews in the 1800s.
